Early Pregnancy Symptoms

The early signs and symptoms of pregnancy can vary from woman to woman. Some women may experience many symptoms, while others may have only a few. The most common early pregnancy symptoms include:

  • Missed period. This is usually the first sign that a woman is pregnant. However, it is important to note that not all women have a regular menstrual cycle, so a missed period does not always mean that you are pregnant.
  • Nausea and vomiting. Also known as “morning sickness,” this can occur at any time of day or night. It is usually worse in the morning, but it can happen throughout the day.
  • Breast changes. Your breasts may become tender, swollen, and more sensitive. You may also notice that your nipples are darker and your areolas are larger.
  • Fatigue. It is common to feel tired and run down during early pregnancy. This is due to the increased levels of hormones in your body.
  • Frequent urination. Your kidneys are working harder during pregnancy, so you may need to urinate more often.
  • Light spotting. Some women experience light spotting or bleeding around the time of implantation, which is when the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of your uterus. This is usually harmless, but it is important to talk to your doctor if you experience any bleeding.
  • Mood swings. The hormonal changes of pregnancy can also lead to mood swings. You may feel more emotional or irritable than usual.
  • The symptoms of early pregnancy can be similar to the symptoms of other conditions, such as the flu or food poisoning. If you are unsure whether you are pregnant, it is always best to see your doctor.
  • The severity of the symptoms can vary from woman to woman. Some women may have mild symptoms that are barely noticeable, while others may have severe symptoms that make it difficult to function.
  • The symptoms of early pregnancy usually start around 4 to 6 weeks after conception. However, some women may experience symptoms as early as 2 weeks after conception.
  • The early pregnancy symptoms usually go away by the end of the first trimester. However, some women may continue to experience symptoms throughout their pregnancy.
